Putin announced a few days of ceasefire in Ukraine starting 8 May
- Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a short break in the fighting in the war in Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, this ceasefire will take effect from the morning of 8 May until 11 May. The dates are significant, as they correspond to Russia's celebrations of the end of the Second World War, otherwise known as Victory Day.
The Kremlin claims that the ceasefire decision was made "for humanitarian reasons," meaning to offer some help to those suffering from the consequences of war. However, as of yet, Ukraine has made no formal reaction to this announcement. Ceasefire Breakthrough

According to a statement from the Russian government:
>"Russia is sure Ukraine must respect this cease-fire. However, if Ukraine breaks the cease-fire, Russian forces will respond quickly and strongly."
Russia also reiterated its willingness to negotiate with Ukraine, stating it is ready for a dialogue with no preconditions. The intent here is to discuss the war's "root causes" and negotiate a peaceful settlement with the involvement of other nations.Putin's Peace Gamble
This was not the first ceasefire proclaimed by Russia during the ongoing conflict. Earlier Russia had declared a 30-hour cessation of hostilities over the Easter weekend. There was only a little less fighting during those hours as both Ukraine and Russia accused each other of violating the truce hundreds of times. So in a way, there was some small usefulness to the ceasefire but not a total stopping of fighting.Ukraine’s Fragile Hope
The announcement of this ceasefire comes at a time that is quite pivotal. The U.S. has called this week "very critical" for any kind of peace-making effort between Russia and Ukraine. Washington has been very active in helping both sides come to an agreement. However, the present U.S. Government under Donald Trump has said that it might pull away from supporting the negotiation effort soon, depending on its perception of any real progress.
War between Russia and Ukraine began here just over three years ago on 24 February 2022, when the Russians full scale invaded Ukraine. Since then, there have been innumerable deaths and damages inflicted by war. An estimated number of hundreds of thousands on either side, mostly soldiers, may have been killed or injured in the ongoing war. Victory Day Truce
At present, Russia occupies approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which is situated in southern Ukraine, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. Despite the efforts of many outside countries to mediate and bring the war to an end, it remains full-blown, with heavy fighting reported from all directions.
Many hope across the globe that this new ceasefire could be small steps toward a larger peace. Ceasefires can allow for humanitarian aid to reach those people stuck in dangerous places: food, water, and medicines. And for families, this gives a moment of rest from the violence and suffering they have been enduring for years now.
However, some experts remain skeptical about the ceasefire's viability. In previous instances, especially towards the close of negotiations for ceasefires, both Ukraine and Russia blamed each other for breaking the agreements. Very little trust exists between the two sides, which creates a huge hurdle for coming to a real peace deal.Crisis in Ukraine
In the statement from the Kremlin, Russia made it clear that while they are negotiating for peace talks without conditions, they expect a ceasefire from Ukraine. If Ukraine does not comply, Russia threatened strong retaliation from its army. This indicates that while Russia speaks about peace, it shall be ready to carry on with the armed conflict if necessary.
At the same time, Ukraine would be prudent to distrust Russia’s offer. The history of ceasefires shows many instances of either side using such resolutions as an opportunity for troop movements, regrouping, or resupply for an immediate future battle. Therefore, it may be expected that Ukraine will wait to see if Russia indeed holds the ceasefire in its own favor before making any further decisions. Will Peace Prevail?
Meanwhile, the United States and other countries that support Ukraine are quite attentively observing the situation. Many hope this reduction in hostilities might diffuse into a more serious peace effort. But the Trump administration has already stressed that its patience will soon wear thin, and if results aren't shown soon, they shall withdraw from trying to mediate the two sides.

Now, the people of Ukraine and the Russians, especially the civilians caught in between, bear the heaviest burden of the situation. They are in urgent need of peace. Many families have lost their loved ones, many homes have been torn down, and many towns and communities have been shattered.
With the ceasefire announcement, there appears to be a flicker of light illuminating such hope. After so many years of carnage, there may yet remain an opportunity for talks and peace. Now time will reveal where either side really has the will to stop all the suffering and build a future devoid of war.
The world will keep its eye open from May 8th to May 11th to see if, for a few days or even more, silence can prevail over the guns, and if this is one little step toward the footpath of lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.
