Mother and child die from injuries after Munich car attack

A mother, 37 years old, and her two-year-old daughter died of injuries sustained during a car attack in the German city Munich last Thursday, police said.Breaking News
There were injuries to at least 37 persons when the car was run into a crowd at a trade union rally.
Police gave the name of the driver, identified in local news as Farhad N., as a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker.

He was arrested on the spot, and prosecutors say he has confessed to the offensive. Motivations behind the attack seemed to be of a religious nature, officials stated.Live Updates
Mother and child were among those taken to the hospital with significant injury following the attack.
"The unfortunate thing is that we have to confirm today the deaths of a two-year-old child and her 37-year-old mother," police spokesman Ludwig Waldinger told the AFP news agency on Saturday.

Authorities alleged the suspect arrived in Germany in 2016 and although his asylum application was rejected, he was allowed to remain in Germany because of the potential risk of being deported back to Afghanistan. He had a residence and work permit that was valid.Terror in Germany
He did not have a prior criminal record and police said there were no reasons to suspect a connection to a jihadist group. He also appears to have acted alone, according to German authorities.
On Friday police reported that the suspect told officers during questioning that he had deliberately driven his Mini Cooper into the crowd.
Munich public prosecutor Gabriele Tilmann told reporters the suspect said "Allahu Akbar" upon arrest; thus, she suggested "he may have had an Islamist motivation."What We Know So Far
In the meantime, campaigning relevant to Germany's election of 23 February has been engulfed in a heated controversy over migration. It was called after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government fell last year.
The violence seen in a string of incidents involving migrants over the past year has only served to lend traction to the far-right party AfD in Germany.
In December, six people died and over 299 injuries occurred when a man drove a car into a German Christmas market.

The suspect was a 50-year-old Saudi asylum seeker, a known outspoken critic of Islam.
